Mountain Bike
nimage1Cycling among volcanic plains can become a real pleasure for mountain bike fans. A good number of lanes and paths, suitable for travel on two wheels will help you discover the canary pine trees, laurel forests, volcanoes and the coast of La Palma.

This is an island that offers the possibility to travel, just in time to catch your breath, from the most lush mountains in the archipelago to the aridity of the youngest volcanoes in Spain. Biking along forest trails of the Cumbre Vieja can become an unforgettable experience.

This is a rather easy route along the lava flows forn several eruptions and from whose hills you can see the western flank of the island until they reach Fuencaliente, where you can bike between vineyards down to the Teneguía volcano and, afterwards, come back to the town. An unmissable opportunity to see all the touristic interesting places, the most traditional ones and some of the most imposing landscapes of the island.

Plenty of clubs offer you all the equipment necessary for the practice of this sport, for both beginners and experts. As a suggestion we propose four routes:
  • Route 1: Área Recreativa del Refugio del Pilar - Llano la Mosca - Roque Niquiomo - Refugio del Pilar. An easy circular route suitable for the general public, through the Eastern slope of Cumbre Vieja. The direct influence of the trade winds over this area will let you enjoy the full wealth of native vegetation: heather-myrtle forests, pine woods and patches of sticky brooms. From the Roque Niquiomo, only accessible on foot, superb and panoramic views. Approximately: 1 hour
  • Route 2: Briestas - Las Cruces - La Mata-Hoya Grande - Briestas. It lies completely within Garafía, which is not only one of the largest municipalities in La Palma but also one of the least populated. The landscape is a mixture of isolated hamlets linked to farmlands, dotted here and there by the natural vegetation of heather-myrtle and pine woods. There is not a single city centre along the route, so it is very important to bring along everything needed from the start. Approximately: 4 hours
  • Route 3: Refugio del Pilar - Fuente de los Roques - Refugio del Pilar. It is the bike equivalent of the Volcanoes Route, one of the most well known trekking paths in La Palma. The difference is, nevertheless, that the tour suggested here offers a return through the Eastern part of the island (and not using the same path as in the coming). It lies totally within Cumbre Vieja Natural Park, the biggest in the island in its category. Approximately: 6 hours
  • Route 4: Roque Faro - Briestas - Hoya Grande - El Jesús - El Time - Los Llanos de Aridane. It is a long distance route which draws a huge arch through all the western slope of the island and where five municipalities are crossed (Garafía, Puntagorda, Tijarafe, Tazacorte and Los Llanos de Aridane). You need quite a physical fitness to dare it, as it also has some steep stretches such as the Mataburros. Approximately: the whole day.
